The pop hole on my chicken house has a light sensitive battery operated motor above. as it gets light the motor winds the wire up and the door opens, at dusk it closes. it took a few days for the hens to work out they had to go to bed when the noise started but they soon got the hang of it.. If you feel that it is fox proof, then there's no reason you shouldn't leave the pop hole open overnight. i have a wooden coop with run and hubby has built a frame with weld mesh floor for it to stand on so that nothing can dig in. i leave the pop hole open all summer so that the girls can get up and go to bed as they please.. The wiki says goats get unhappy with a door open, but i've enough to do every day on the farm without adding "open door/close door" to my list. i used to leave my coop door open. then winter hit and a few days later my egg yields doubled. when spring came i left it open again and a few days later my egg yields were cut in half..
Basically, except during winter, i leave the coop hatch open all the time. i have to disagree harshly. always close the doors in the evening before going to bed.
